Gilray Plant sells drop-forged scaffold fittings which are tested to EN74-1 and are independently audited by the National Access & Scaffolding Confederation (NASC). Our drop-forged sleeve coupler scaffold fittings are part of our full range of scaffold fittings which includes doubles, swivels, and wrapovers. These fittings are descendants of the “Scaffixer”. In the early part of the 20th Century the modern era of scaffolding began when the system of Tube & Fittings (T&F), as we now know it, was developed by Daniel Palmer Jones (known as the Grandfather of Scaffolding) who patented the “Scaffixer”. This extraordinary and relatively simple item was a coupling device far more robust than rope which revolutionized scaffolding construction and enabled the building of skyscrapers. In 1913, his company was commissioned for the reconstruction of Buckingham Palace, during which his Scaffixer gained much publicity. Palmer-Jones followed this up with the improved “Universal Coupler” in 1919 – this soon became the industry standard coupling and has remained so to this day. The basis of this system has not changed. Scaffold tubing of various lengths is connected together by the use of different types of coupler to form a complete structure. Of course, there have been many refinements and improvements in safety over the years, but the principles of “tube & fittings” scaffolding have not changed and it is still the major form of scaffolding in use worldwide!
